When the market is crowded, you must play by their rules.

You can’t just come up with anything and hope for the best because there are too many people doing what we do already!

But how will you write copy that converts? Well luckily (and this may sound obvious) it all starts here: with a plan – and not a complicated one either. There is a simple formula to follow, add in three tricks and you are good to go.

The Three Fundamentals

Now, if you have been on social media with your business, you will already know this. The name of the game is to get people to stop their mindless scrolling and get their attention long enough to either watch your video, look at your image and read the first few lines of your post.

What people see first is either the image or video, which means these need to be colourful, eye catching and get attention in a very short period of time.

  • Eye catching image or thumbnail of video
  • Interesting first line
  • Valuable and helpful content that either solves your target markets problem or entertains

We call this copy that converts formula, the focus in on what your ideal customer what to see, read and feel…spend time on testing different strategies, and find the one that works.

So you want to write copy that converts right?

You’re in luck because we have three simple tricks for making your writing stand-out and improve your posts on social media.

Take a deep breath and relax.

You are not alone in this struggle for attention, but you can still write copy to capture your audience’s interest – just follow these three simple tips!

#1. Know your target audience

This one seems like a no-brainer, but you would be surprised how many people try to write for everyone instead of a specific group of people.

When you know who your target audience is, you can adjust your writing style and focus to appeal to them specifically. This way, they are more likely to pay attention to what you have to say.

Literally write to one person as if you were having a conversation with them over coffee.

Ideal client or target audience takes time and evolves, it’s not something that is done once and done quickly, just as you and your business does.

Yes, demographics are important. Let’s face it, something written for a young lady in her twenties may not appeal to someone my age who is at a different part of life’s journey.

With that said, psychographics is even more important. What does your ideal customer think and dream about? What are the things they worry about? And no…it may not have anything to do with what you do.

#2. Write in a conversational tone

As I mentioned before, you’re having coffee with your ideal customer, and your writing should sound like you are having that exact conversation with the reader, not lecturing or telling them what to do on the first meeting.

We converse with people, not at them and your copy on social media and your videos should be the same.

Use everyday language that is easy to understand and avoid using jargon or technical terms unless absolutely necessary. This will make your copy more relatable and down-to-earth.

#3. Use active voice

Passive voice is when the subject of the sentence is being acted upon, rather than doing the action itself. For example: “The ball was thrown by John.” Active voice would be “John threw the ball.” Using active voice makes your writing more dynamic and engaging, so try to use it as much as possible.

Here is another simple example…The cat chased the mouse.

In this sentence, “cat” is the subject and “chased” is the action. Active voice is more interesting and easier to read than passive voice.

We call this definitive syntax…. where the words say exactly what they mean…. short, sharp and to the point.

Avoid, maybe’s, should’s and hopefully.

You know you know your work, so share that definitively and with authority.

Final Tips

Take some time to think about the kinds of things you want to share with your target market.

What are you an expert on?
